![]() ![]() ![]() Favorite combination is Oathbound/Xenoplague + Dark Tower maps. Very reminiscent of Alpha Centauri (though with once exception which I will get to) unlike Beyond Earth - I have no idea what the motivations are of the various factions in CBE, why is that one anti-xeno? Who fucking knows!Īnyway, I’m really enjoying it. One thing that sells this for me, however, is the premise and the lore. How about a more tanky, shield giving (Esteq mod), health giving, armor giving necromancer? You can have both. Want a Plague Lord that’s spreading infestation and destruction over the battlefield and resets after a kill? Here you go. And with a few resources, you can change what your units can do. That’s cool! It feels special when you find a unique mod or weapons and putting it on a unit vs. Leave the permanent upgrades to the heroes (but also not locking you to a tree) but also allow you to modify your troops and heroes with special items which their own flavor. The units are a step back from Alpha Centauri’s complexity due to the rigid upgrade list (you’re not modding them, you’re upgrading them) but also inheriting a trait that causes decision paralysis (since once you commit, you’re locked). Is it food? Is it currency? Who knows! I did like how you can modify your leader’s load out, that was neat. “Civilization: Beyond Earth” attempted to replicate that magic but it was so shallow with the most convoluted resource system imaginable - to this day, I still don’t know what the fuck half of these resources do. I was a big fan of Alpha Centauri, which I considered to this day the best 4X game in terms of storyline, immersion, horror, depth even to this day. I really love the lore, the factions, the storyline and even the Unit Modding system. ![]()
